About

Eight years deep on SaaS marketplaces.

I grew up in Kolkata, studied Electronics & Communications at WBUT, and somewhere along the way fell sideways into software because I couldn't stop tinkering with websites. Eight years later, I'm a Senior Engineer in Delhi who lies awake thinking about P95 latencies.

The story so far

I started in 2017 at Web Planet Infocom, shipping client websites in PHP and WordPress. It was the kind of job where you build 15 sites in a year and learn fast about deadlines, browser quirks, and what "production" really means.

In 2018 I joined Techjockey as a PHP Developer. Eight years and two promotions later, I'm an SDE-III leading a six-engineer pod. I've been in one place long enough to see decisions play out — to ship something, watch it break under load two years later, and rebuild it better. That kind of long-loop feedback is hard to get any other way.

Along the way I led the AWS migration off our on-prem stack, rebuilt search on Elasticsearch, cut our API latency by three-quarters, and shipped two international marketplace launches. I also write about performance and system design at theunusualsingh.com/writing.

Strengths

End-to-end ownership

I've taken systems from HLD whiteboard to production AWS to post-launch tuning. The hand-offs are where most projects slip; I close the loop.

Performance with receipts

I don't hand-wave about "fast" — I work in milliseconds, P95s, and Core Web Vitals. Every claim on this site has a number behind it.

Tech leadership without ego

I lead a six-person pod through code reviews, standards, and 1:1s. The goal is to grow the team's senior engineers, not to maximise my own output.

Philosophy

  • Boring code is good code.
  • Cache invalidation is a design problem, not a syntax problem.
  • The most expensive line of code is the one that runs unnecessarily.
  • Tests are a love letter to your future self.
  • The senior engineer's job is to delete more code than they write.

What makes me different

Most engineers with my YOE either go deep on one stack or wide and shallow. I've gone deep on a single domain — SaaS marketplaces — across the full stack. I know what breaks at 1K concurrent users, at 10K SKUs, and at the moment your VP says "we're launching in the UAE next quarter."
